Publishers Clearing House – Fifty Plus Going On Fifteen

The beginning of a week of four (4) Mondays after a holiday started today and with it I will apply my thoughts on Publishers Clearing House the great American sweepstakes.

We all remember the possibility of Ed McMahon coming to our door and awarding us a million dollar prize but to this day I do not actually know anyone that has ever won the prize. I am sure it is not an urban myth but I don’t know anyone who has won.

Yesterday was the four (4) month anniversary of my mothers death and she would always fill out the paperwork for a chance to win the Publishers Clearing House million dollars from the time I was a young child until her stroke in early 2015. I always joked with her that there was no way we would win the Publishers Clearing House million but she told me if we did she would split it with everyone in the family.

After my mothers stroke in 2015, I took over the family responsibility of filling out the paperwork for Publishers Clearing House thinking perhaps her dream of winning a million dollars could be achieved if I continued the tradition. Initially, I filled out the paperwork that was mailed but wham…. there was an e-mail option that would send the info and link you to the prize submission websites.

Since early 2015, I have been submitting online sweepstakes, lottos, kenos, searches, etc., in an attempt to win the million dollar prize which has actually grown. I believe I have become addicted to these e-mails and although I have not won I will continue to keep my mothers dream alive and if I win, I will split it with the family and friends.

I find it somewhat humorous that I have selected this method to keep my mothers hopes and dreams alive but she understood the importance of financial security in helping you live a happy life.

Labor Day – Fifty Plus Going On Fifteen

Great day to be alive to all current, future and past Quintastics!!

I am sitting here on Labor Day wondering what is missing from the end of summer holiday.

Wham, I realize that the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon has not existed for over five (5) year and worse yet there will never be another now that Jerry Lewis is no longer with us. I have always given to the boot drives or the retail store static drives for MDA so did not realize this era was gone until I looked for it on television and online today.

For those of us that are boomers or near boomers, during our formative years there was not 24 hours per day television except for Labor Day weekend when the MDA Telethon occurred. Like clock work, you would have the telethon and within a week to ten (10) days, you would have the Saturday cartoon preview on Friday night to see all the new cartoons.
When we were growing up, we were told time speeds up as we get older. I must agree that when we were young, time did drag and as we have aged, time appears to fly by. I must ask if time is really flying or does time fly because of the advancement of technology.
Think about the differences from the 60s/70s to and Now:

Then —- and Now

3 to 4 TV Channels —- Thousands of TV Channels.
18 Hour Per Day TV —- 24 Hour Per Day TV.
Records/8 Tracks/Cassettes —- CD/DVD/MP3/On-Line.
Use Bicycle, Skateboard or Feet to Meet Up and Play —- Use Gaming Consoles, Facebook On-Line to Play.
Board Games, Physical Games, Imagination —- Gaming Consoles, On-Line Games.
Road Maps, Encyclopedias, Libraries —- GPS, Google Maps, Wikipedia, On-Line.
Land Line Phones, CB Radios, Short Wave Radios —- Smart Phones, Cell Phones, On-Line.

Technology is both friend and foe. We have never been so powerful but we have never been so reliant. Do something different today to connect with your formative years.

Visit a library or park.
Ride a bike or kayak.
Go to a yard sale or antique shop and rekindle your memories.
Play a board game or yard game.

Slow down and smell the roses. Time may be moving fast but we have the capability to slow it down if we reconnect with activities that we enjoyed when we were young.

For me, watching the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon was the first sign that summer was done and fall was here. Time for new cartoons, football and hockey season, raking and later snow shoveling, etc.

I have lived and traveled much of the nation and world during the first half of my life. I traveled on fast attack submarines and surface ships while in the US Navy and I have traveled as a civilian on planes, trains, automobiles, buses, motorcycles, bicycles, canoes, kayaks, and on my feet.

During my career of 40 years, I have managed anywhere from 1 person to greater than 500 people as a sailor in the US Navy and senior staff member as a civilian. I have experienced much joy mentoring and/or coaching most of those that have worked for or with me.

As I had indicated earlier, I love mentoring and coaching people since each of us can live a happier and more fulfilling personal and professional life. Life is too short so we all need someone to talk to, laugh with, etc.

Is There A Gray Ceiling? Fifty Plus Going On Fifteen

I have always believed that with age you gain wisdom, respect and the ability to take advantage of these skills when making a career change. Perhaps I am old-fashioned or naive but there appears to be a slight Gray Ceiling that we bump into and it has only occurred to me in the last couple years.

Some Gray Ceiling Indications are subtle and some are not so subtle. These include:

Over qualified.
Low compensation offered when qualified for position.
Not trainable.
Bored doing this job.
Technology challenges,

I have never been one to sit back and accept artificial limitations and I have always been a cup half full person so this was basically a call to throw down the gloves and do everything in my power to re-package myself.

There are numerous articles, blogs, books regarding how to re-invent/re-package yourself and I chose to do the following:

Update your Linked In profile if you have one, build a Linked In account if you don’t have one.
1. My Linked In profile was not complete even though I have been a member for years.
Revise your resume and if needed build different versions of your resume.
1. I have multiple resumes based on the opportunity I am looking at and I have a watered down resume that is less than two (2) pages for generic submissions.
Obtain quick reference letters or statements and add to your resume package, profiles, etc. Make them a mixture of people you have worked for, worked with and worked for you.
1. I have references spanning 20 plus years for trending.
Brush up on current technology and software packages.
1. Being able to talk the talk that is half the battle.
Feel good about yourself and get over your hang ups.
1. Eat better, sleep better, participate in fun activities, volunteer, contact people you have not spoken to for extended periods, start a journal, work out, etc…
Bring your “A Game” to online applications, phone interviews, and in person interviews.
1. With technology, the job hunt has become very impersonal so you need to shine whenever possible.
Most importantly, the world has changed so you need to Network, Network, Network and if that is not enough, network some more.
1. I have contacted numerous old contacts and have added many new contacts during this endeavor.

I am not saying there is age discrimination but I am saying it is more difficult to find a position when you are Fifty Plus Going On Fifteen so pull out the stops and put your best foot forward.

It is not my goal to work for someone else my entire career but until I am able to devote 100% of my time, debt free to an independent career I will do what it takes to make it a little closer to that goal including re-inventing/re-packaging myself.

I am not a professional writer and I am not a guru but I like many of you have years of experience blowing into my sails and believe there is a place for us in our current work environment.

Great Day For A Solar Eclipse – Fifty Plus Going On Fifteen

The clock is ticking and it has been nearly 100 years since the last coast to coast solar eclipse so I guess it is a big deal or an indication of our mortality. For some of us, we were able to experience a solar eclipse since we were in the Great White North (North Dakota) in 1979 which leads me to my new website “FIFTY PLUS GOING ON FIFTEEN”.

There is much talk of fifty being the new thirty but I like to look at it as being QUINTASTIC which sounds so James Bond. We may move a little slower and hurt a little more but we love to have fun and age should not be an excuse.

Much has happened from 1979 to 2017, entire lives have been lived, kids have grown, nations have collapsed, wars have been fought, friends have been lost, and we have all lived through predicted catastrophes that never happened.

It is hard to believe that in our “QUINTASTIC” lifetime we have gone from black and white televisions with no remote and three (3) channels to more channels than you can count and online content. We have gone from party lines to bag phones, to cell phones, to smartphones in every pocket. We have gone from computers the size of a refrigerator or larger to computers that fit on a pinhead. Do we thank Area 51 or Star Trek for the advances??

The purpose of this website is to have some fun but also discuss topics that impact those that are fifty plus. I will keep this short today but will dive deeper in future articles.
